Reserve Geologique de Haute-Provence

In 1989, what created the protected area comprising 37 municipalities of 04, which represents an important protection department. Its territory regulated now covers 230,000 ha, includes 59 communes of the Alpes de Haute Provence (52 municipalities) and Var (7 municipalities): the greater Reserve Naturelle Géologique Europe. It asserts itself and becomes a pioneer of "geological heritage". This concept hitherto unknown was born in 1991 at the First International Symposium on Protection of Geological Heritage in Digne les Bains.

This meeting organized by the Reserve includes 150 participants from 39 different countries and led to the Declaration on the Rights of the Memory of the Earth. (Paper available for download below).

The heritage inventory conducted by the Geological Reserve on its territory are over 800 sites. A number of them have been protected, studied or valued.
